See the footprint at Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), also known as the ‘butterfly mountain’, due to the old tale of how butterflies flock to the mountain, keep their head on the footprint and sacrifice their lives. At an elevation of 2,243 metres (7,359 ft), it is a picturesque mountain. The legends of the mountain are many: the Buddhist’s believe it is the footprint of Lord Buddha, the Hindu’s believe that it is of Lord Shiva and the Muslims and Christians believe that the footprint belongs to Adam.
A physically exhilarating experience, the climb to the summit of Adam’s Peak, also known as Sri Padaya takes approximately 3.5 hours. The ascent is quite harsh, with steep and sometimes uneven steps. There are stalls that sells hot drinks and snacks and at night, the path is illuminated by oil lamps.
